France breaks new record at Rio 2016 !
France breaks a new record : 42 medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics (10 Gold, 18 Silver and 14 Bronze). Meanwhile, Paris is vying, together with Budapest, Los Angeles and Rome, to host the 2024 summer Olympic Games.
Some 369 French athletes took part in the summer Olympic Games from 5th to 21st August in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil alongside other 10 500 participants from 205 countries.
The French team led a successful 17-day campaign bagging 42 medals (10 Gold, 18 Silver and 14 Bronze). This was France’s best performance since the 1900 Games in Paris. The objective set by the French National Olympic and Sporting Committee (CNOSF) was largely met as the 41 medal record registered in Beijing in 2008 was beaten. On the overall medal table, France came 7th behind Japan (41 medals), Germany 42), Russia (56), China (70), Great Britain (67) and USA (121).
The French athletes put up impressive performances especially in the following disciplines: boxing (6 medals, a first since the 1948 Games), athleticism (6 medals), Judo (5 medals), riding (3 medals) and handball (2 medals).
Meanwhile, Paris is vying, together with Budapest, Los Angeles and Rome, to host the 2024 summer Olympic Games. The successful city will be announced after the elections scheduled to take place during the 30th International Olympic Committee meeting in Lima, Peru, in September 2017.
