France shines through sport: Paris marathon

With more and more athletes taking part each year, the Paris marathon is becoming the annual sporting event not to miss! The 2015 edition took place last Sunday. Here is an overview of a race which attracts participants from the whole world.

With 54.000 people registered for the 2015 edition, the Paris marathon is now one of the most popular marathons in the whole world, comparable to the ones in New York and Chicago. When the event was organized for the first time in 1 976, only 126 runners were able to cross the finishing line. Last year, they were 39 115 to finish the race, thus testifying to the increasing participation in this marathon.

Although most runners inside the pack were French (29 445 French people), a lot of foreigners had also registered, like Americans (2 880) and Africans (686). By the way, the only athlete who could win twice the Paris marathon was the British Steve Brace, in 1989 and 1990.

The world and Olympic champion, the Ugandan Stephen Kiprotich, did not take part in last Sunday’s marathon but had however honored the capital city with his presence last year, during the half-marathon.
