Kampala Geopolitics Conference 2018

The conference aims at creating an interactive and dynamic platform for dialogue and free exchange of ideas cutting across contemporary, local and international geopolitics.

The Kampala Geopolitics Conference is a two-day open public event about world geopolitics. It is inspired by the successful “Geopolitics of Nantes” in France. The conference will be held at the emblematic University of Makerere, one of oldest and most prestigious universities in Sub-Saharan Africa, where many African leaders were trained.

The partners involved include: The Embassy of France in Uganda, Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) Uganda & South Sudan, Makerere University Kampala, the French Institute for International and Strategic Affairs (IRIS), Alliance Française de Kampala and UN Women Uganda.

The conference aims at creating an interactive and dynamic platform for dialogue and free exchange of ideas cutting across contemporary, local and international geopolitics.

The following 21 topics relating to global political, social and economic debates will be discussed:

Friday 26th October 2018:

  • Leave no one behind: What is the economic cost of excluding minorities?
  • Black panther phenomenon: Rethinking Africa through Fiction and Arts
  • Social Media, Fake News and Online Manipulation
  • Opening doors or building walls?: Managing migration in US, Europe, Africa
  • Make the planet great again: Is there still hope to fight climate change?
  • Youth is the future: What are we doing to give hope to the young generation?
  • Long live diplomacy: Multilateralism in the 21st Century
  • Are religions peacemakers or troublemakers?: The Role of Religion in Volatile Societies

Saturday 27th October 2018:

  • Old masters, new players: Is the African economy in the hands of foreigners?
  • Democracy in danger?: The pillars of democracy and its challenges
  • Sports, not just for fun anymore?: Is it a distraction, an industry or soft power?
  • Alpha males, newcomers, populists: What leaders are we craving for?
  • Avenues for peace and stability : Peacebuilding, Regional Diplomacy and Military Intervention in Africa
  • The power of food: Shall Agriculture fill your stomach or your purse?
  • Powerful women: Are they a threat to the males or their best partners?
  • The future of East Africa: Is the European Union a model or deterrent?
  • What is going to kill us first?: Global threats to human health
  • Countering the Expansion of Islamist Terrorism: From Middle East, Maghreb and Horn of Africa to Western countries
  • Is money ruling the world?: Side effects of unbridled capitalism
  • One planet, too many people?: Are we too many for the resources of our planet?

Format: 21 panel discussions, 1hour 30 minutes each.

Venue: Makerere University: Main Building, Agricultural Building and Freedom Square
