Learning the French language [fr]
Since 2003, the French military mission organizes language classes for the Ugandan officers willing to learn French as a tool for military partnership with other francophone countries.
French is the only language taught within these English-speaking UPDF Armed Forces.
It aims at strengthening the UPDF ability to take part in overseas operations among coalition including French-speaking partners. This teaching also allows Ugandan Officers to attend military courses in France as in French speaking training centres in Africa, facilitating their integration within continental institutions and peacekeeping operations
500 French learners trained (30 per year in 2016-2017 and 100 in 2017-2018 as by 2 French Teachers based in Jinja as by the Alliance Française in Kampala and in Fort Portal)
About 15 UPDF soldiers left in training centres in France and/or in French speaking countries in Africa, every year.
