November 11th: a tri-nation remembrance service to celebrate the centenary of the armistice
To celebrate the centenary of the 1918 armistice, embassies of Germany, France and the UK held a common ceremony. The service took place at the British High Commissioner’s residence. It gathered many citizens from all represented countries and Ugandans veterans of World War Two. The ceremony was animated by a spirit of unit as Her Excellency Stéphanie Rivoal emphasized, presenting this tri-nation service as a « symbol of reconciliation, peace and hope ».
His Excellency Mr. Peter West, the British High Commissioner, His Excellency Dr. Albrecht Conze, the Ambassador of Germany and Her Excellency Mrs. Stéphanie Rivoal, Ambassador of France all gave speeches. Quoting President Macron’s speech, Her Excellency Mrs. Stéphanie Rivoal, underlined the fact that this ceremony is an occasion "to pay tribute and express our gratitude to all those who have defended us in the past, and all those who defend us today, to the point of sacrificing their lives.".
The choir of The French school "Les Grands Lacs" also participated into the event as the children sang "La Marseillaise" when the French flag was raised.The blessing of Padre Patrick Aldred ended the ceremony that was followed by a cocktail in the gardens of the British High Commissioner’s residence.
