Participation of Annick Girardin to the Game against Poverty
Organized every year since 2003 by Zinedine Zidane and Ronaldo, Ambassadors of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the Match Against Poverty this year had the honor to welcome Mrs. Annick Girardin, French Secretary of State for Development and Francophonie.
In the evening of Monday 20th April, the 12th Match Against Poverty was played in the presence of its two Ambassadors, Zinedine Zidane and Ronaldo, the aim being to sensitize and mobilize public opinion on the UN Millennium Development Goals, and raise funds to support specific development projects selected by the UNDP.
A successful game
This 12th edition of the game attracted lots of fans, the jam-packed stadium with 34.000 spectators being a testimony. This was not surprising given that Zinedine Zidane and Ronaldo had convinced other soccer legends to play with them, against St Etienne sports association (ASSE), like Fabien Barthez, David Trezeguet, Christian Karembeu, etc.
The evening match was therefore between ASSE and the Zidane, Ronaldo &Co team, the latter losing 7 to 9 goals against the local team. A cheerful mood characterized the game whose aim was not to win but to raise as much funds as possible for the fight against Ebola virus. Indeed, two third of the collected sum of money from selling the tickets went to Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia, three countries harshly hit by the Ebola outbreak. The remaining one third went to the association Coeur Vert, the of the ASSE foundation which organizes many social programmes.
On her part, Annick Girardin, reechoed the objective of “zero case” in the fight against Ebola and congratulated the French people for its desire to eradicate the virus.
