The Night of Ideas 2020: “Being Alive” [fr]
The fifth Night of Ideas, coordinated by the Institut Français, took place on 30 January 2020, with the participation of the Ugandan climate activist Hilda Flavia Nakabuye.
Organized around the theme of “Being Alive”, the Night of Ideas brings together speakers from all backgrounds including intellectuals, researchers and artists, invited to debates in partner locations on all five continents.
The Nuit des Idées – Night of Ideas – celebrates the movement of ideas between countries and cultures, disciplines and generations. Every year it is an opportunity to discover the latest knowledge, listen to those who are driving ideas in every field and discuss the key issues of our times.
In a reflection of the fluid nature of ideas, all forms of event are welcome from conferences to theatre, performances, screenings, concerts, etc. and all locations from the most prestigious to the most unusual are invited to join the party by proposing their original interpretation of the proposed theme.
As the night sweeps across the globe, the Night of Ideas will be broadcast on social networks making the Night of Ideas a global event. #lanuitdesidees
This theme puts the question of ecological balances and man’s relationship with the world at the heart of 2020’s Night of Ideas.
The theme encourages participants to discuss issues raised by technological changes and the arrival of artificial intelligence.
“Being alive” also entails reacting, taking action and giving meaning to human actions and existence. What does it mean to be alive? What is our role in the living world? In what way does “being alive” require us to take action? These and many other issues will be at the heart of the Night of Ideas.
Life, biodiversity and the environment will be key themes on the international stage in 2020. France will play a leading role by hosting the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Marseille in June 2020, ahead of the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP15) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in October 2020 in Kunming in China.
