Kampala Geopolitics conference 2019 set for October 17-18 at Makerere University

Inspired by ‘Les Géopolitiques de Nantes’ in France, initiated by IRIS institute, the conference seeks to create an interactive, dynamic platform for dialogue and free exchange of ideas cutting across contemporary, local and world geopolitics.

The second Kampala Geopolitics conference is slated for 17th and 18th October 2019 at Makerere University. The official program was unveiled at a press conference on 2nd October 2019 at Makerere University by the organising partners.

Inspired by ‘Les Géopolitiques de Nantes’ in France, initiated by IRIS institute, the conference seeks to create an interactive, dynamic platform for dialogue and free exchange of ideas cutting across contemporary, local and world geopolitics.

The a two-day public event is jointly organised by the Embassy of France in Uganda, Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) Uganda & South Sudan, Makerere University Kampala, the French Institute for International and Strategic Affairs (IRIS), Alliance Française Kampala, UN Women Uganda and Reach A Hand Uganda (RAHU).

H.E Jules-Armand Aniambossou, Ambassador of France to Uganda, expressed satisfaction with the success of the first edition of the Kampala Geopolitics in terms of the quality of the debates, the high turnout, and the dynamism of all the panels and panelists. The event was graced by more than 4000 participants.

While congratulating the host, Makerere University, now ranked 5th in Africa according to the latest World University Rankings by the Times Higher Education, the Ambassador assured that this second edition promises a new dynamic, with new topics such as sustainable developments goals, new events on the University’s Freedom square, including more exhibitions and debate forums, as well as new speakers and moderators.

The Ambassador emphasized the importance of freedom of speech in democracy, saying that Kampala Geopolitics is all about human rights to debate and live in a sustainable environment. He observed that two radically opposed approaches clash today : that of disintegration which advocates for the withdrawal into oneself, and that of illusion that wants to make believe that everything is fine. ‘Our role is to build a third way,’ he reasoned.

In the spirit of promoting the culture of debate, the Kampala Geopolitics partners facilitated a two-day precursor debates and training sessions at Makerere University in collaboration with Uganda Debate society.

Experts from Uganda and the region will be joined by international researchers and scholars to engage in participatory and documented debates on global topics.
Internationally acclaimed Ugandan journalists Charles Onyango-Obbo, Allan Kasujja and Andrew Mwenda will feature on the panel. From France, Haute-Savoie Senator Cyrill Pellevat and renowned Le Figaro journalist Renaud Girard are expected to attend and participate in the debates.

Some of the topics of discussion include : the global demographic challenge / power play in the great lakes region / smart cities for a smarter future / powering Africa’s transformation / a world without hunger / non-state actors and global governance / Human trafficking and modern day slavery / African Unity / The ICC and Africa / the future of aid / climate change etc.

A music concert featuring top artists, including Nina Roz, Geosteady, Naava Grey, Nutty Neithan, Suzan Kerunen and Faisal Mostrixx, will also take place at the Makerere freedom square on Friday 18th October 2019 from 6:00PM.
