French Embassy seeks to strengthen food security in Karamoja
With a budget of 500,000 euros, this project will seek to address the food aid needs in the Karamoja region. The project will run from June 2022 to May 2023 in Almudat and Nakapiripirit districts and will be implemented in partnership by the NGOs ACTED and Food for the Hungry.
This project will seek to address both the urgent needs and the long-term resilience of the target populations in a region of high food security stress.
The project will reach over 1,500 households with pregnant and lactating women and/or children under 2 years of age. It will aim to support them with food aid through various mechanisms such as unconditional and conditional cash transfers, agro-ecology training, soil restoration activities and support to authorities in the management of restored areas. The project will also seek to address the maternal and child health needs that households may face.
The French Ambassador to Uganda, Mr. Jules-Armand ANIAMBOSSOU, stressed France’s long-term commitment to the resilience of the target populations. The French Embassy had already supported an ACTED project between 2019 and 2021 aiming at training the populations of Nakapiripirit in agro-ecological practices.
At the signing of the project’s funding protocol, ACTED Uganda and South Sudan Deputy Director, Mr. James LOVE, said "this new project helps to bring to life our global strategy of 3 Zeros : Zero Poverty, Zero Exclusion and Zero Carbon in Uganda". The Director of Food for the Hungry, Mr Malvern CHIKANYA, stressed the need for a long-term approach in the Karamoja communities to achieve long-term transformation.
This project is funded by the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs’ Programmed Food Aid Facility.
